Discover the ways in which software engineers shape and transform society.
When you imagined what you would do for a career as a child, did it include sitting in an office writing code? Probably not. After all, our childhood fantasies about our future careers tend to involve more exciting and meaningful things such as being a doctor and saving lives. However, the funny thing is that creating software for applications and computers can save lives, and shape and transform society in a range of other important and profound ways. Keep reading to find out how.
SAVING LIVES
A job doesn’t get any more important or meaningful than saving lives, and while I’m not in the OR as an engineer there are plenty of software applications that make the difference between life and death.
For example, software engineers are crucial in the programming of VR, and AR medical training programs that allow doctors, surgeons, and nurses to practice tricky procedures over and over again until they are experts. All without having to risk danger or pain to real patients.
Software engineers also have a big part to play in making medical diagnoses more accurate through the use of AI. Indeed, by programming generative AI to analyze medical results the ability to pick up on issues can increase greatly STATS
Connecting People
Another way in which software engineers shape and transform society is by connecting people effectively. Indeed, software engineers have been involved in creating every app and tool that allows people from all over the world to interact instantaneously.
It’s hard to imagine it now but for centuries the human race relied on written letters, or mounted messengers to communicate across long distances. Yet now we can open our phones and WhatsApp, zoom, or send a message on Discord to anyone, anywhere in the world, which has not only revolutionized the way we work but the way we stay connected to friends and loved ones globally as well.
PROVIDING ENTERTAINMENT
Software engineers also transform society through their role in making entertainment so easy to access. Compared to our parents’ generation when they bought TVs to watch the moon landings, with only three channels, all of which signed off for the night around 10 pm, the access we have to online streaming services and Youtube, as well as all the additional podcasts, audiobooks, and music is mindblowing! Oh and don’t get me started on video games!
Democratization Of Knowledge
Last of all software engineers have a very important role to play in shaping society because their work has enabled the democratization of knowledge, primarily through the internet. What the internet has allowed is for everyone with a connection to have access to broadly the same information.
Scientific studies and academic books are no longer only available to students and teachers in academic institutions. Indeed, their subjects are also covered in a range of media including summary articles, and videos which make them far easier to understand and digest.
Additionally, online we can also find plenty of information on how to learn, which is an invaluable skill that facilitates the democratization of knowledge. All of this would not be possible without the internet, and as the internet would not be possible without software engineers it demonstrates just how vital we are in the continued shaping and transformation of society.
Final Thoughts
Software engineers transform and shape society in many different ways including connecting people, helping people to access information, providing access to entertainment, and even saving people’s lives.
